Soap Bottle Vase with Newspaper Flowers

For this post, I decided to upcycle two things instead of one. The more, the merrier, right? Anyways, both of these are super easy and add some great color to the non-stop snow.

Materials for the soap bottle vase:
- an empty soap bottle
- paint (I used green, orange, pink, and black)
- paint brushes

Materials for the newspaper flowers:
- newspaper
- pencil
- scissors
- hot glue
- a toothpick
- pipe cleaner

Soap Bottle Vase

1. Make sure you get rid of all of the labels on the bottle.

2. Paint it two shades of green (or whatever color you are using).

3. On the bottom of the bottle, paint some orange dots.

4. Using the pink, paint some petals around the orange dots.

5. I painted black stems for the flowers because my bottle was green, but you can use other colors if you wish.

6. I also wrote "Go Green" because it goes with my blog, but you can write other things such as "Peace".  It is wonderful to add some color to your room!!

I could not make only a vase; I need some flowers for it! So I made some newspaper flowers to fill the vase.

Newspaper Flower

1. Cut out a template for a simple flower and draw four copies of the template on newspaper.

2. Cut the flowers out and curl the petals of three of the flowers using the toothpick.

3. Fold the petals in (towards the center) of one of the curled flowers.

4. Hot glue the flower to the flower that doesn't have it's petals curled.

5. Cut one petal off of one of the remaining flowers and cut two petals off of the last flower.

6. Take the 4-petal flower section and glue the two ends of the flower together.

7. Do this with the 3-petal and 2-petal section.

8. Using the remaining petal, curl it around a toothpick and glue the end.

9. Pick up the the 4-petal section and cut the point on the bottom.

10. Repeat this with all of the other sections.

11. Now glue the 4-petal section on top of the flower section we made in step 4. Then glue the 3-petal section onto the 4-petal section, etc.

12. Voila! You have a stunningly beautiful flower! It also looks great when you stain the newspaper with tea bags before making the flower to give it an old look. To make a stem, I took a pipe cleaner and bent it and a 90 degree angle. Then, I glued the pipe cleaner onto the bottom of the flower.

13. Place the flower inside the vase and you are done! This is great to add some spring into this long, cold winter.
